When It's Not Worth Storing!

15/5/2018

Store it?

Sometime you might decide that you would rather get rid of some stuff rather than store it in your self storage unit.  So, what do you do with it next?  Here are some of your options.

Don't store it, give away
Gift it

Give it to a charitable organisation such as the Salvation Army, the Good Sammy or St Vincent de Paul.  If the item is small enough, drop it off at the shop, otherwise, give them a call as you will find that some of them will be happy to come and collect.

Remember:  Do not donate anything that is broken, damaged, torn, ripped, stained or in anyway faulty.   As a simple rule, if there's something wrong with it, then they can't sell it.

Note also that in some instances, because of government regulations, they are unable to accept white goods/electrical items and mattresses even if these things are in perfect condition. So if in doubt, call them first before drop off.

Give it to a friend or family member.  Somebody’s trash is another’s treasure!

Don't store it. sell it
Sell it

If you think you may get a few dollars out of it, why not try selling it.  Here are some options:
  • Place an ad on Gumtree or ebay
  • Contact a second hand dealer
  • Organise a garage sale
  • Join in the next car boot sale in your area
  • For books, consider second hand book shops or your local library
  • For label clothing, contact clothing recycle stores

Don't store it, throw it away
 Throw it away

Well, sometimes there are no other options but to throw it away.  You can:
  • Take a trip to the tip.  Do a search online for location and charges.  Check your Council’s website as well, some councils allow free drops.  If you don’t have a vehicle big enough to transport to the tip, consider hiring a trailer or truck (check mid week specials).
  • If you can’t go to the tip yourself, contact a couple of removalists and get some quotes.  They will move it out and get rid of it for you.  The money you spend may save you time and a sore back.
  • Hire a skip bin.  Make sure you have the space where the bin will be dropped off, and hire the right size.
  • Keep it in the garage until the next council verge collection.
