Choosing a Storage Unit - The Right Size

24/8/2017

Storage Unit Sizes
You’ve called a few storage facilities, you gave them the list of what you want to store and now you are faced with the dilemma of having been quoted for different storage unit sizes.  Some quotes are in square meters, others in cubic meters and others gave you dimensions such as 3 by 3 or 1.5 by 3.  So which is right?
Storage unit sizes
There’s nothing worse than arriving at the storage facility, you open the storage unit door, only to find that it’s too big (you are paying for storage space you don’t need) or too small (not everything will fit).  Of course, this can all be fixed by a simple transfer but what if they don’t have the right size available?  You are stuck…

That is why making sure you have the right size before signing up is essential.  NEVER sign up before you have seen the actual storage unit you want to rent.

The best way is to go to the facility, talk to the staff and look at units of different sizes.  But before you do that, here are a few things you must do:
  1. Know what you are going to store.  No need to include the sofa you are giving the kids or the outdoor furniture you’ll be taking to the tip.
  2. Identify your big items, ie sofas, armchairs, wardrobes, etc.  These are the one that will impact the most the size of the unit.
  3. Identify odd shape items, eg exercise equipment, BBQ, etc.  These are usually not stackable, and may take some space.
  4. Look at a room in your house, such as a second bedroom, and ask yourself “would it all fit in there?”.
  5. Have a look at our Storage Units page.  There you will see examples of filled up storage units of different sizes.
Online space calculators are great, but from experience I know they are not very accurate and it’s more likely you are going to be under quoted.

So don’t be shy!  Come and talk to us.  We’ll show you some sizes and come up with the right storage unit for you.
